Paul C. Smedberg was appointed in January 2019 to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia as a principal director of the Board of Directors. In this new role, he remains a Commissioner on NVTC. He also serves as a member of the NVTC Executive Committee and the NVTC WMATA Committee.
Mr. Smedberg previously served on the Alexandria City Council from 2003 to 2018. Representing the City of Alexandria, Mr. Smedberg joined NVTC in 2006 and served as its chairman in 2014 and 2018. He also served as a principal member of the Virginia Railway Express Operations Board from 2006 to 2018, serving as its chair in 2013 and 2017. He served as an alternate director to the seat held by Christian Dorsey on the WMATA Board of Directors. He also represented the city as a member of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority Planning Committee, the Alexandria Marketing Committee and the City Waterfront Committee. Professionally he is Director of Policy & Public Affairs at the American Society of Nephrology. Mr. Smedberg earned degrees in economics and history from Allegheny College and is a Fellow, Sorenson Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia. In 2010 he was named an Outstanding Virginian by Equality Virginia.
