Canek Aguirre was appointed to NVTC in January 2019 and served as chair in 2022. He also serves as an alternate on the VRE Operations Board, the WMATA Board of Directors, and the Virginia Transit Association Board of Directors. He chairs the NVTC Legislative and Policy Committee and serves as a member of the NVTC WMATA Committee and the NVTC Executive Committee.
Mr. Aguirre was first elected to the Alexandria City Council in November 2018 and re-elected to a second term in November 2021. Born and raised in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrants, Canek is the first Latino to ever serve on the City Council. During his time in public office, Canek has focused on increasing housing opportunities, investing in our public schools and transportation infrastructure, eliminating health inequities, and making government more accessible and accountable. He serves on the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) and is the current chair of the Virginia Board of Social Work. Canek has been recognized as one of the 100 most influential people for the Hispanic community in the Washington, D.C., metro area by El Tiempo Latino and as one of Alexandria’s 40 under 40 honorees. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
